Smoking Children by Frieke Janssens.
“A YouTube video of a chainsmoking Indonesian toddler inspired me to create this series, “Smoking Kids”. The video highlighted the cultural differences between the east and west, and questioned notions of smoking being a mainly adult activity. Adult smokers are the societal norm, so I wanted to isolate the viewer’s focus upon the issue of smoking itself. I felt that children smoking would have a surreal impact upon the viewer and compel them to truly see the acts of smoking rather than making assumptions about the person doing the act. ”
There were no real cigarettes on set. Instead, chalk and sticks of cheese were uses as props, while candles and incense provided the smoke.
You can see the making of video here and see more pictures of this project at the artist’s website here.
I kind of like these pictures and how the photographer portrays the fake glamour that we would see in old cigarette ads, yet the fact that this are kids leaves a major impact in the viewer (because lets face it if they were adults we wouldn’t really be batting an eye and some of us would be going “Oh this is pretty”)
a bit off-topic, I used to play with candy-chalk cigarettes as a kid, I used to love those things (I used to see it as smoking without the nastiness).
it shows how no one thinks smoking is TRULY ok. see an adult do it and we go “its their choice, their right, blah blah” but see a kid do it and its “omg! that is so unhealthy, do they KNOW those cause cancer!? they are too young to be risking their health like that!” etc. people are outraged by children smoking because we wanna protect children from the stupid shit we as adults do to ourselves
